Ms. Vieno Nurmilaukas of Savitaipale, South Karelia (FIN) recently passed away, aged 108.
She was born on 23 September 1917.
In July 2025, following the passing of 108-year-old Helena Honkanen of Uusimaa, she became the oldest known living person in Finland.
She was the last person born before Finland got its independence on 6 December 1917.

Vieno Nurmilaukas, Finland’s Oldest Resident, Dies at 108
Vieno Nurmilaukas, the oldest living person in Finland, passed away in Savitaipale, South Karelia, on 12 April, aged 108 years, 201 days.
Vieno Nurmilaukas was the last known person born in present-day Finland before the Finnish Declaration of Independence from Russia. She was born on 23 September 1917 in the village of Niinimäki, in the municipality of Savitaipale, South Karelia. After marrying Arvi Nurmilaukas in 1943, she moved from her native village to Kaulio. She spent her entire life as a housewife.
In July 2025, following the passing of 108-year-old Helena Honkanen of Uusimaa, she became the oldest known living person in Finland.

She is the 40th oldest person in Finnish history.
Her successor is Eila Hukkanen, born on December 28, 1917, the 44th oldest person in the country's history.
Time as Finland's oldest person:
She served as Finland's OLP for 304 days, the longest since Helvi Kissala (June 13, 2023 - June 12, 2024, 1 year, 151 days).
Age:
She died at 108 years, 201 days, the oldest person to die as the country's oldest person since Gunnel Stenback, who died at 110 years, 70 days on November 30, 2024.
Location:
She lived in South Karelia, the first time someone from that region has held this title.
