When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

May she rest in eternal peace. It is a terrible loss for her family and Austria.

She was the last known person in my homecountry born before WWI.

I was several times in her hometown Euratsfeld visiting relatives, and I knew her. She was a legend and inspired so many people because of her humour, happiness, kindness, trust in God and hard working as a farmer.

RIP Anni. We love you forever and are so glad having had you around us so long.

Sit tibi terra levis.

Anna Wagner, Austria’s Oldest Person, Dies at 111

Anna Wagner, the oldest living person in Austria, passed away in Euratsfeld, Lower Austria, on 12 May, aged 111 years, 340 days.

Anna Wagner was born in Euratsfeld, Lower Austria, on 6 June 1914. In her youth, she managed a small farm with four cows and a few pigs. She attended Euratsfeld Elementary School for eight years. As there was no secondary school available at the time, after completing those eight years, she enrolled in the Home Economics School in Amstetten.

She married and went on to have at least one daughter, Margarete Rechberger.

On 17 January 2025, following the passing of 113-year-old Margarete Tröstl, she became the oldest living person in Austria.
