Francisco Ernesto Filho, Brazil’s Second-Oldest Man, Dies at 111

Francisco Ernesto Filho, the second-oldest man in Brazil, passed away in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, on 6 March, aged 111 years, 335 days. He passed away after being admitted to the hospital on 3 March due to complications from pneumonia he developed last month, from which he never fully recovered.

Francisco Ernesto Filho was born in Areia, Paraíba, Brazil on 5 April 1914. In his youth, he worked on a farm. Later, during his time in Recife (Pernambuco), he was employed as an elevator attendant. After moving to the city of Rio de Janeiro, he worked as a gardener and, to supplement his income, worked with gardening and cleaning in private residences. Gardening became a lifelong passion that he continued as a hobby well into his old age. He had seven children (four sons and three daughters). His wife passed away on 13 July 2023, aged 98.

At the time of his passing, he was the second-oldest known living man in Brazil, after João Marinho Neto.

Rest in peace.

Descanse em paz, Sr. Filho.

When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."
