Furthering to the above, I find it a little bit puzzling that people seem to be treating this as sad news. Both of them have lived substantially longer than life expectancy, had really fascinating lives draped in luxury and they've been married to each other for 77 years. I don't really see anything remotely sad about the fact they're getting to spend their remaining time peacefully in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by family and with no stressful hospital visits. So few people get such a privilege.ย
The hospice care that they are getting is probably of the form of a DNR order, as well as no invasive treatment, such as an oxygen tube. It's really just "allowing nature to take its course", and that's the option I'd rather take as well when I get old. They're probably still getting a very high standard of medical care.

Mrs. Carter sadly passed away at the age of 96 surrounded by her family at 2:10 PM eastern time; 2 and a half hours before this post

I donโt know if Jimmy actually said this or if his family wrote it, but here is the official statement from him:
"Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."

Very sad news for the Carterโs and what a wonderfully long marriage.
We can also see the very broad spectrum that what is now called โend of life careโ can actually encompass.
a couple of days for Mrs Carter and about 9 months for Jimmy so far.
Rest in peace Rosalyn Carter.
