I wanted to start this topic to see how our supercentenarians are doing throughout 2024.

As we know, the last 3 Januarys have been bad for supercentenarians (especially the 2022 crash).

So here we will mention deaths aged 114 and older.

Without forgetting the deaths of 113 years (which is about 114 years)

I wouldn't like to say that deaths of supercentenarians aged 110-112 are "the norm", but we eventually consider deaths aged 114 and older to be more serious.

January 2024 passed with a death of 1909.

While it wasn't as bad as previous Januarys, there was a meltdown among supercentenarian men.

We also had 3 deaths from 1910 and 3 deaths from 1911 (also between deaths from 1912 and 1913)

Starting in February we had another loss in 1909 (rest in peace Pearl Berg)

I'm also worried about what might happen to 1910 this year.

I think other people that weren't the oldest people in their countries should be added, like Berg and Matsubara were in the top ten, and also Seki Yoshida was 114 too

I actually made this list to list deaths older than 114 (maybe older than 113).

To have a standard on this list and compare with other years.

Clearly, if we think about deaths at ages 110, 111, and 112, every year would be bad, so I wanted to set a standard.

But it is also interesting to see the oldest people in each country who died during the month, the man or the person

The summer of 2024 has not been good. We have lost five members of the top 10, four of them in August, including the world's oldest person. These people also included the all-time recordholders for Spain, Germany, and Ibaraki and Saitama Prefectures along with Masa Matsumoto.

Three of these people were born in the 1900s, so we went from 8 to 5 people quite quickly. This means that Marie-Rose Tessier went from 11th to 6th in a matter of 50 days, which seems mind-boggling to me, and Italy's oldest person is now in the top ten; a similar climbing of the ranks happened with Martin Diaz, Kondo, and Whitehead. Additionally, we also lost John Farringdon, one of the strongest males, along with Vincent Dransfield in late June.

Exactly, these months were really cruel

It’s all the more disappointing that these losses occurred in the northern hemisphere summer months.

Whilst deaths will always be a regular occurrence at these advanced ages, winter tends to be the worst for supercentenarian deaths; particularly January, though the full December to April period is often tough.

Let’s hope for a better 24/25 winter outcome after the big losses in early 24 and now again, in the summer months.

This topic is more heavily aligned to individuals, rather than groups or trends. However there is a disappointing trend in the 113+ population that is occurring in 2024, though equally it could be attributed to 1911 births.

The number of validated 113 year olds passing away in the month following their birthday (using 30 days as a guide) is far higher than it has even been before.

Until recently (and subject only to the odd limbo case, where the candidate may have been either side of the 113th birthday) the highest number I can find for any year was two persons passing away in the 113-0 to 113-30 range. This appears to have occurred in 1998, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.

At this stage 2024 (and 1911) has seen FIVE pass away within this age range - being:

Eudocia Barria Barrientos 113-24

Mary Florence Walker 113-16

Lillian Moran 113-15

Asayo Sato 113-5

Yuki Nitta 113-0

With 2 other living persons currently within this date range and other validated persons scheduled to reach 113 this year, we can only hope this trend has come to an end.

Good observation, and I hope the same.
I also noticed many deaths right after the 110th birthday, up to 30 days later. I know it's more common, because there are more people. It's a bigger group of people who reach 110 than 113. But I also found a bigger trend this year. Many people who had a 110th birthday topic would soon hear about their death.

@diego Unfortunately I have noticed the same thing. I feel especially with Italian supercentenarians this year, they have passed away within a month of turning 110 at a high rate. Not as much, but quite a few for American SCs as well (Francis Cook, Almina Peterlin, Christine Davis) off the top of my head)

@chrisr Unfortunately, the cause of death of Eudocia was pneumonia due to covid, I am sure that if it weren't for that she would still be alive, she was a strong supercentenarian.

I have noticed a trend in male supercentenarians dying shortly after turning 111 years, Herbert Wolding, Salvatore Nardi, Luis Torras, Tsuneji Oyama, Alfonso Maria Rojas Perdomo, all of them died approximately 1 month after turning 111.

From a couple of years earlier than 2024, but also Giles Cropsey.
