Constantin Cojocari, Moldova’s Oldest Known Man, Celebrates 106th Birthday

Constantin Cojocari, a World War II veteran and possibly the oldest living man in Moldova, celebrated his 106th birthday on 2 February, according to Moldpres.

A resident of the village of Sofia in Hîncești District, he was born on 2 February 1919, in what was then the Kingdom of Romania.

From 1942 to 1944, he served as a telegraphist in the Romanian Army, having been mobilized to the front. Despite the dangers of World War II, he emerged unscathed. However, in 1951, the Soviets deported him to Siberia, where he endured nine years of extreme cold, hunger, and hardship. Upon his return to his native village of Sofia, he worked in agriculture and as a driver.

In March 2024, at the age of 105, he was honored with the National Order of Faithful Service, Class III, with peace insignia—an award designated for military personnel—by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. The Romanian Embassy in Moldova stated that the award was granted in recognition of his dedication to Romania and his significant military service during World War II.
