In her 110th year, Mayo woman dies

One of Mayo’s oldest living persons, living abroad, has died in her 110th year.

Mae Williams Dunne passed away in Chester in the UK earlier this month.

She and her family and friends had celebrated her 109th birthday on April 1st of this year.

Born in Drummin, Westport in 1917, from the age of five she lived in Cross, Killeen, Louisburgh.

She later emigrated to the UK.

She had become quite a celebrity in her latter years, featuring  in Mayo Day celebrations and The Irish in the UK TV programmes, and spoke to Midwest Radio News on her 109th birthday last April.

She had proudly lived through all four of Mayo All Ireland Football wins, 1936, 1950, 1951 and 2026.

Rest in peace.

When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."
