LEWIS, Norman Benjamin

24 Dec 1916

12 Aug 2026

The Presidents and members of the Rotary Clubs of Henley Beach and West Beach are deeply saddened by the passing of our long-serving member, Norm Lewis, aged 109.

Until recently, he was considered the third oldest man in Australia.

Rest in peace.

When the young commander of the guard declared his love for her, she rejected him simply because his frivolity startled her. "See how simple he is," she told Amaranta. "He says that he’s dying because of me, as if I were a bad case of colic."

  • He is the oldest man in South Australian history.
  • The oldest living man there now is Colin Wagener, born on December 2, 1917; he is the third-oldest man currently living there.
  • He is the 12th-oldest man in Australian history.
  • He was the last surviving Australian man born in 1916, dying at the age of 109 years and 231 days; among the last surviving men of each birth year who have since passed away, he was the oldest since Frank Mawer—the last of the 1912 cohort—who died at 110 years and 33 days on September 17, 2022.
  • He is the third person born in South Australia to reach this milestone—the first since Allan Chilman (born in 1914), who died on August 18, 2021.
  • He is also the third person to die in South Australia to reach this age; Allan had previously held that distinction as well.
  • He is the 96th-oldest person in Australian history.
  • He was the 15th-oldest living person in Australia.
