Hello,
Some of you may know I have been working on collecting data on centenarians from the region of North East England for some time now. I initially was just researching centenarians from my City, but I then later expanded it to a County level, and now Regional level. This is an ongoing project which is still far from complete but I thought it may be useful or interesting to some here to have access to the data as it stands so far.
As I say I still have well over 1,000 cases indexed waiting for research and verification so it's a long way off being comprehensive, but even as it stands now it gives a decent overview into the centenarian population of the region through time.
Thanks
Beamont
Nearly 4,000 entries; that's superb work.
Number 2201 Dr Tony Leahy was a distant connection of mine. His grandfather is buried here. Although Kilmallock, Co Limerick was the birth registration district, the actual location was Ballysally, Co Cork. He would have been 102 today. His father died in 1969 aged 86, not a bad age for the time. His granduncle Dean Michael Canty was a high ranking churchman in the early part of the 20th century.

Thank you, it means a lot.
Interesting that longevity in his family seems to stretch back to the 19th century. Thanks for the info regarding his actual birth location, I will be sure to check and amend.
Extraordinary work, Beaumont. Congratulations!

Great work Beaumont!
I can't imagine how much time this took to put together, you have a similar number of cases as on the OIB database. Did you have to purchase death certificates to get dates of death for earlier cases?
I had a rough look through the top of the list to see how comparable it was to OIB, I did spot one case not listed - Ethel May Stobbs (nee Pawson) born 2/5/1904 at Upleatham, died 10/1/2014 at Durham.
I do have cases on OIB for people aged 106+ from 2003 onwards (though not available publicly yet), so please let me know if I can be of any help in verifying those as I most likely have the information to hand already (at least for the vast majority of cases).

Thanks so much Andrew, that means a lot. Almost 14 years worth of work and still not complete.
From 1993 onwards it is very simple to acquire death dates, but before then I rely on archived newspaper obituaries and probate indexes. I cannot afford to purchase death certificates for all the older cases in one go, but I am in the process of doing so as and when I can afford it (I've verified maybe 30 cases through buying certificates), but I try and avoid having to do that where I can.
You can see the amount of work still to do here (and this doesn't even include unresearched cases) - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSPvvKSqe3XAfmZH24TJuiKmn8GOwySbAA1lgG1B6VYtY4ne-bR6SpB2GfDYEvL3ZlYEbVvb7GRx_s-/pubhtml?gid=489210917&single=true
Yes I checked and can see I have Ethel Stobbs indexed on 22 Nov 2022 awaiting research and verification. I usually try and fast track the 107+ cases so I must have missed her. Thank you.
Thank you for offering to help with recent cases, if I come across one that I am struggling with then I shall certainly be in touch!
Extraordinary work, Beaumont. Congratulations!

@beaumont Thanks! It's quite impressive that when Ferdinad Ashmall died, the person that bettered his regional record hadn't even been born yet, and his male record stood circa 170 years.
P.S if you need help in the verification of any Eastern-European-born centenarian you couldn't verify so far, I'll gladly try to help.

I had never done the work to calculate this, so thank you very much!
It's cool that NE England has the distinction of having the UK's second earliest verified centenarian on record, and also the UK's oldest person on record.
Update as of 21 July 2023
Nearing 4,000 validations. Seems unbelievable considering where I started off with this project fourteen years ago.

Update as of 12 Nov 2023
Ordered by Date of Birth
Roughly I'd say this currently represents around 65-70% of the all time centenarian population of North East England. I still have a large list (1,000+) of unresearched and unverified cases, most of whom died after 2008.

An excellent list, as usual Beaumont, with more additions in the future I’m sure.
Interesting to see that the area began regularly producing multiple centenarians from the late 1830s.
And what a year 1771 was.
Numbers have averaged, above the equivalent of one per week for many years now, so we can easily see just how much work has gone into it.
@chrisr thank you very much! Yes the numbers are getting insane now, but I’ve started so I’ll make sure I finish 🤣
There are still over 1,000 unverified cases, not to mention cases not yet identified. So a way to go yet. Interesting to note that, according to my records, the month with the most number of deaths was April 2020, a localised example of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
